During a dig behind where an 1880s train station once stood in the Dakotas, I uncovered a stoneware liquor jug that had been buried for over 120 years.

While it’s possible a passenger discarded the jug, the number of liquor containers found suggests there may have been a saloon operating out of the depot.

Among the discoveries were a variety of items dating from the 1880s to around 1900, including 11 medicine bottles, a jelly jar, a pickle bottle, four prescription bottles, 15 liquor flasks, five beer bottles, one wine bottle, 14 liquor bottles (mostly quarts), and two liquor jugs.

These findings provide a glimpse into the past, hinting at the possible social activities and commerce taking place around the train station during its operation.
